As the result of an incident that occurred at the Pope County Detention Center on Friday, August 5th, at approximately 6:07 p.m., an investigation was initiated regarding the assault of an inmate. Sheriff Shane Jones states that on Tuesday, August 09, 2016, six (6) people, four (4) of which are inmates, were arrested in connection with this incident and charged with Felony Battery 2nd Degree. The two (2) others, Pope County Detention Center Corrections Officers, were also charged with Felony Battery 2nd Degree for their prior knowledge that the incident was going to take place. The investigation is on-going with the cooperation of the 5th Judicial Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Arkansas State Police. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. No other details or comments will be released until the completion of the investigation and the filing of formal charges.
“As soon as I discovered that their actions and decisions were illegal and inappropriate, this office took immediate action and launched an investigation,” stated Sheriff Jones. Jones went on to say “this administration will not tolerate any improper or illegal activity.” He also thanked the Pope County Criminal Investigation Division and the Arkansas State Police for their diligence in this investigation.
