Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley, Pope County is the 12th largest populated county in the State of Arkansas, covering over 820 square miles. Pope County boasts notable landmarks including the Arkansas River, the Ozark National Forest, Lake Dardanelle State Park, Long Pool Recreational Area and Bayou Bluff Park. It is one of the seven most visited counties in Arkansas, offering outstanding areas for viewing and photographing wildlife, especially eagles and waterfowl. Pope County is host to some of the largest fishing tournaments in Arkansas and offers abundant natural resources for hiking, swimming, hunting and camping. It is also home to Arkansas Tech University. As of the 2017 census, Pope County had a population of 63,835 residents. The unincorporated cities and towns in Pope County include Atkins, Dover, Hector, London, Pottsville, and the county seat, Russellville.
The Pope County Sheriff's Office was established in 1829 when Sheriff H. Stinnett (served from 1829 to 1830) was placed into office. During its 190-year history, the Pope County Sheriff's Office employees have strived to provide the county with excellent law enforcement, public service and public safety.
